They Don't Make Them Like They Used To

A brief look at the Lancia Y10 Turbo by Pietro Lo Giudice (21-10-2003)

Speaking from experience I can only say what I am about to say with one objective in mind; pleasure. Pleasure that stirs your senses; awakens your demons; leaves you numb with excitement - pleasure that will leave you gasping for more!

The Y10 Turbo is not about top speed, nor is it about 0-60 times. Although these figures are the easiest measures by which to compare any car and although very healthy on the Y10 they are certainly only one small part of this cars true self.

The Y10 Turbo is a small car with a crisp throttle, eager sounds, grippy handling and a sharp response engine that can be kept explosive in any gear which makes the car feel much faster than something bigger; regardless of what figures may suggest.

Our perception of performance is all about sensory stimulation and for this reason the Y10 is king. It oozes and overflows in this department through which the driver becomes the receptor of an overload of positive and pleasurable feedback - a feeling that is sadly much lost in the modern day GTI.

Nowadays, car makers are tied by tight emissions, legislation and fuel-economy pressures. This is one reason that the Y10 Turbo is unique, it was one of the last turbocharged twin Weber cars produced; a simple prod of the accelerator squirts a healthy dollop of fuel into a willing throat, which is the recipe for a whoosh of power from the IHI turbocharger and a giant hydrocarbon puff out of the exhaust.

The Y10 Turbo will defiantly evoke memories of the Noughties which is what classic cars are all about! This car unlike the modern day sports hatch will have you raise a smile before you raise a sweat. This is an ideal practical classic for the driver who demands satisfaction. The Y10 Turbo is a car thats alive, a stunning car that makes you want to drive it fast to feel the rush!

Thats pleasure, thats the Y10 Turbo!

Car number thirteen... A Y10 Turbo Review

Taken from: http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/ajwebster/13.html

Following the lack of 'go' which the Panda had in abundance something with a bit of sparkle was called for, this was found in the form of a Lancia Y10 Turbo. Having experienced my previous Y10 this car was very familiar to me and being the Turbo version it certainly had what the previous car had lacked.... power. Not only did this car go well, it handled well, it stopped well, it was quiet, the Fiat/Lancia engineers had excelled the car was as near perfect as any Italian car could be. One of the cars the Y10 Turbo was compared to many times over was the Metro Turbo and having experienced both, I think I can safely say that the Lancia was head and shoulders above the Metro in virtually all departments. Technically speaking the Y10 Turbo was an 85bhp version of the 1050cc engine used in the Fiat 127 and many other Fiats of the day, it had such delights as an intercooler, mapped electronic ignition, intelligent boost control, oil cooler, oil level alarm float, most of these items of course being absent on the Metro sadly. This may all sound like a technological nightmare when all combined in one place but it all worked fine for me.

Probably one of the best and most underrated small cars in its day, the Y10 always seemed to suffer from a lack of character which often lead to ot being the butt of many jokes, I've never quite worked out why this was as really the car was a design just a bit too far ahead of its time, just take a look at the strange automotive creations on the road today which make the Y10 look a bit staid.

The usual I.C.E. installation was performed which finished off the car very nicely, my usual Pioneer head unit and spectrum analyzer being easily concealed in the dashboard's cavernous recesses, the rear shelf from the previous Y10 came into play again housing the same 6x9's which had been capable of delivering deafening sound with virtually no distortion in the previous Lancia.

I can't quite remember why I decided to move on to another vehicle but eventually after about 6 months that was what happened. The Y10 being adopted by my father as his Uno Turbo was written off in accident on the way back from picking up my next car.

Peter Dietsch and his Y10 Turbo...

...checking the local papers and Exchange and Marts I came across a Y10 Turbo. Perfect I thought. A lot of money, but I had been working my butt of for the holidays and I had saved enough for it... I made the trip up to Staffordshire to see the car and it was perfect. So here I was 17 years old and owner of a Y10 Turbo and it was fantastic. The performance was brilliant and I felt so proud of the car. Over the course of time I spent money changing the suspension, installing a loud system and a set of wheels. The car was incredibly quick and would leave bigger cars for dead... At this time I was offered a Y10 Turbo Engine... I got Trevors number off Peter and I spoke to him at great length... I really wanted to make the ultimate Y10. I decided to get a bank loan out for £2500 and made a decision to get looking good, so I went out and bought new wheels, Compomotive 7 x 15, tyres-195/45/15, A pair of bucket seats with 3 Point Harness, Koni rear dampers, Monroe front dampers, lowered springs, full rear roll cage and the rest of the money went towards a very expensive respray in Blue Bronze. The end result looked absolute brilliant and turned heads everywhere... I decided to do my first track day at Goodwood, which was an event run by the Lancia Motor Club on a annual basis normally in March. The day was fantastic and I learnt what the car would do-on and off the track... The Y10 was still going strong and one day Trevor gave me a call to say that he wanted to know if I wanted the old engine from his Y10. Of course! With all these additional items the car was now an absolute monster and was knocking out nearly 190bhp which for a 1049cc engine is huge... when the power came on all hell broke lose! Great fun.

Car Survey Comments on the Y10 Turbo...

Fastest 1 litre around... Can be made to go very quickly very easily, just a bleed valve will often see 120bhp... Cute car, plenty of charector and you won't see another one for miles around... Just slips in under the tax limit... £100 for a whole year!! And performance that will see off most 2 litres... Y10 Turbos do vary a lot, but when you get a good one they are brilliant. My car runs very strong. The Charade was a lot more highly tuned than the Y10. The Y10 has the potential to go a lot quicker. My car has a bleed valve which gets it pulling about 120bhp. This results in 0-60 in about 7 seconds. The engine is cabable of a lot more where as the Charades engine is not. I also have gas dampers and SPAX springs on my car which make it handle very well. Plus my car has 14" alloy wheels with 185/50 Yoko's tyre and has loads of grip. Not to mention how much more stylish the Y10 is than the Charade, plus the Y10 was the first small turbo charged car.
